Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) is a severe form of PMS (premenstrual syndrome) caused by a genetic sensitivity to hormone fluctuations. The sufferer may have an increased sensitivity to natural reproductive hormones during the 2 weeks (Luteal Phase) leading up to the start of the period cycle. Symptoms of PMDD can include, extreme fatigue, depression, food cravings, self-deprecating thoughts, mood swings, hypersomnia/insomnia, joint/muscle pain, and suicidal thoughts.
Premenstrual Exacerbation (PME) is similar to PMDD in respect to the symptoms arising during the Luteal Phase. The difference between the two disorders is that PME occurs when hormone changes during menstruation worsen the symptoms of a pre-existing condition such as General Anxiety Disorder or Depression.
