Most couples aren't broken. They're stuck in patterns neither person chose. We help you understand what's driving the disconnect and learn to respond differently.
When couples come in, they usually arrive with a list. Things their partner says or does that hurt. But the surface content of arguments is rarely where the real work happens.
What drives most relationship distress is a pattern. A cycle both people get pulled into, often without realizing it. Each person responds to the other in ways that, while understandable, tend to make the cycle worse instead of better.
Couples therapy helps you see the cycle clearly, then start to step out of it together. Not by deciding who's wrong, but by understanding what's happening underneath for both of you.
Couples come in at all stages. Some in acute distress, others who just want to strengthen something that already works. All are welcome.
Our couples therapists are trained in the gold-standard, evidence-based approaches for relationship work.
Sometimes the cycle a couple is stuck in didn't begin in the relationship at all. Old injuries — childhood experiences, past relationships, attachment wounds — can shape how each partner reacts when things get tense. One person shuts down. The other pursues harder. Neither response is really about the argument in front of you.
This is where our practice's trauma focus matters for couples work. Wholetherapy is a trauma-focused practice at its core, and our couples therapists work within the same clinical structure as our EMDR and trauma recovery teams. When individual trauma is driving the couple's cycle, we can name it — and treat it — rather than working around it.
"On average, couples wait six years of relationship distress before reaching out for help. Couples who come in earlier consistently have better outcomes."
Couples therapy at Wholetherapy isn't a place where one partner gets validated against the other. Our therapists work to make sure both people feel heard, understood, and respected.
No referral required. Most insurance accepted. We'll match you with the right couples therapist for both of you.
