EMDR Therapy

A gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps your nervous system process what your mind has been carrying.

What Is EMDR

Your brain already knows how to heal

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a structured therapy developed to help people recover from trauma by getting unstuck from memories that keep playing on a loop.

When something traumatic happens, the brain doesn't always finish processing it. The memory stays raw. You can know intellectually that you're safe now, but your body still reacts like the threat is happening. EMDR works directly with the nervous system to help that processing finally complete.

You don't have to relive the worst moments in detail. The goal isn't to forget what happened. It's to get to a place where the memory no longer runs the show.

Who It Helps

EMDR works for more than just "big T" trauma

You don't need to have survived a single dramatic event for EMDR to help. It's effective for many kinds of distress, including the kind that builds up slowly over years.

Complex and developmental trauma
PTSD and acute stress
Childhood and attachment trauma
Anxiety and panic
Depression rooted in trauma
Grief and loss
Emotional dysregulation
Phobias and specific fears
Attachment injury in relationships
First responder and military trauma
Burnout and chronic stress
Feeling stuck despite knowing why
The 8 Phases of EMDR

A structured process built around your safety

EMDR follows an eight-phase protocol. Every phase has a purpose, and no two clients move through them at the same pace.

Phase 01
History Taking
Your therapist learns your story, identifies what to work on, and builds a plan with you.
Phase 02
Preparation
You build the coping tools and inner resources you'll need before any deeper work begins.
Phase 03
Assessment
Together, you identify the specific memory, the beliefs tied to it, and how it shows up in your body.
Phase 04
Desensitization
Bilateral stimulation helps your brain process the memory until it loses its emotional charge.
Phase 05
Installation
A new, more grounded belief gets reinforced and connected to the memory you just worked on.
Phase 06
Body Scan
Any leftover tension or sensation in your body is identified and worked through before moving on.
Phase 07
Closure
Every session ends in a way that leaves you stable, regardless of where the processing is.
Phase 08
Re-evaluation
At the start of each new session, you check in on progress and confirm what's been resolved.
What to Expect

Your first sessions are about safety, not speed

A common worry about EMDR is that it means jumping straight into the hardest stuff. That's not how it works.

First Session
Getting to know you
Your therapist will ask about your history, what brought you in, and what you're hoping for. There's no pressure to share anything you're not ready to share. It's a conversation, not an interrogation.
Early Sessions
Building your foundation
Before any processing happens, you and your therapist build stabilization skills together. This phase doesn't get skipped. Your sense of safety comes first.
Ongoing Sessions
Moving at your pace
Processing happens at the pace you set, not your therapist's. You're in control the whole way through. Most clients start to notice shifts in how they feel and react, often between sessions.
The Wholetherapy Difference

EMDR isn't a side offering here. It's our specialty.

Most practices offer EMDR as one option among many. At Wholetherapy, it's a core clinical specialization with a level of training that goes well beyond the basics.

As a Halifax Region practice where EMDR is a core specialization and focus, nearly every clinician at Wholetherapy is EMDR trained. We work with clients in person from our Dartmouth office — minutes from Halifax — and virtually across Nova Scotia.

See which of our EMDR therapists in Halifax are accepting new clients, with credentials and direct booking.

EMDRIA Approved Consultants
Our team includes EMDRIA Approved Consultants, the highest level of EMDR credentialing. That means our clinicians don't just practice EMDR. They train and supervise other EMDR therapists.
Built-In Clinical Consultation
Our clinicians work within a supervision structure where complex cases get reviewed regularly. You're not getting one person's perspective. You're getting the benefit of a whole clinical team.
Specialization in Complex Trauma
We specialize in complex trauma, developmental trauma, and attachment injury. These are the kinds of trauma that need the most careful, skilled approach. It's where we do our best work.
Common Questions

Questions about EMDR therapy

How many EMDR sessions will I need? ↓
It depends on what you're working on. Some people experience meaningful relief in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or developmental trauma usually takes longer. Your therapist will discuss a realistic timeline with you early on.
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail? ↓
No. EMDR doesn't require you to walk through your experiences in detail. Your therapist will ask targeted questions, but most of the processing happens internally. A lot of clients find this a relief compared to traditional talk therapy.
Is EMDR covered by insurance? ↓
Most major Canadian insurance providers cover EMDR therapy when it's delivered by a registered clinician. That includes Manulife, Canada Life, Sun Life, and others. Get in touch and we can help you verify your specific coverage before your first session.
Can EMDR be done virtually? ↓

Yes. Virtual EMDR is well established and, for most people, works as well as in person. The bilateral stimulation is delivered on screen. You follow a moving visual cue, or use alternating tones through headphones, and the eight-phase protocol is otherwise unchanged.

What virtual sessions ask of you is a private space where you will not be interrupted, a stable connection, and headphones. Your therapist will also set up a grounding plan for the end of each session, since you will not have the natural transition of leaving an office.

Virtual is not the right fit for everyone. If you dissociate significantly, or if home is not a place you feel safe, your therapist may recommend starting in person at our Dartmouth office and moving online later. That is a conversation for your free consult.

We offer virtual EMDR across Nova Scotia, and elsewhere in Atlantic Canada subject to clinician licensure and availability.

What's the difference between EMDR trained and EMDR certified? ↓
EMDR trained means a therapist has completed the basic training required to practice. EMDR certified means they've gone further, completing additional supervised hours and passing a formal review by EMDRIA. Our team includes both certified clinicians and EMDRIA Approved Consultants, the highest credential available.
Is EMDR different from talk therapy? ↓

Yes, though most people end up doing some of both. Talk therapy works largely through conversation: understanding what happened, naming patterns, building insight. EMDR works through the nervous system. Rather than explaining a memory in depth, you hold it in mind while your therapist guides bilateral stimulation, and the brain does the processing.

That difference matters most when you already understand your history intellectually but your body still reacts as though the threat is present. Insight alone often does not shift that; EMDR frequently does.

Many clients at Wholetherapy do both. Stabilization and the work between sessions look a lot like good talk therapy, and the processing phases are EMDR. Your therapist will talk with you about which the work calls for.
