Veterans Affairs & CAF Coverage

Wholetherapy is a Veterans Affairs Canada (VAC) registered provider. We bill VAC directly. You focus on the work, not the paperwork.

Quick Facts

What you need to know

Direct billing to VAC
We are registered VAC providers and bill VAC directly through Medavie Blue Cross. No out-of-pocket cost for approved clients.
Approval required
VAC mental health coverage requires authorization for a specific service-related condition. We'll help you understand the process.
CAF members & families
Coverage extends to currently serving CAF members through CAF Health Services and to eligible family members under specific programs.
Specialized clinicians
Several of our clinicians have specific experience with operational stress injury, PTSD, and the unique pressures of military service.
What VAC Covers

What VAC mental health coverage includes

If you've been approved by VAC for mental health services related to a service-connected condition, the following are typically covered.

  • Individual psychotherapy sessions with a VAC-registered provider
  • EMDR therapy for service-related trauma
  • Treatment for PTSD and operational stress injury (OSI)
  • Depression, anxiety, and related mental health conditions tied to service
  • Moral injury work
  • Couples or family therapy where clinically indicated (separate authorization required)
  • Virtual sessions across Atlantic Canada
A note on approvals
Coverage requires that the condition you're seeking care for has been approved by VAC as service-related. If you're not sure about your status, we can help you figure out where you stand before your first appointment.
How It Works

Getting started with VAC coverage

The process is more straightforward than it sounds. Here's what to expect.

01
Get in touch
Call us or send an email to let us know you want to use VAC coverage. We'll ask for your VAC client number and basic information.
02
We verify your coverage
Our admin team contacts VAC to confirm your approval status and what's covered. This usually takes 1 to 3 business days.
03
We match you with a clinician
We match you with a clinician whose specialization fits what you're working through. Several of our team have specific military and first-responder experience.
04
Book your first session
Once coverage is confirmed and you're matched, we book your first session. You won't be asked for payment information.
05
We bill VAC directly
After each session, we submit billing directly to VAC through Medavie Blue Cross. You don't handle invoices, paperwork, or reimbursement.
Why Veterans & CAF Members Choose Wholetherapy

Clinicians who understand the work

A lot of therapists mean well. Fewer actually understand what it's like to have your nervous system stuck in a state of readiness for years, or to watch what most people will never see. Our clinicians who work with veterans, currently serving members, and first responders bring specific training in operational trauma, moral injury, and the cultures these communities come from.

We've done this work long enough to know it's not about pushing or fixing. It's about steady, careful work with someone who isn't flinching from what you've carried.

Clinician Spotlight

Meet Mitzi Mitchell, MSW

Mitzi Mitchell is our Clinical Specialist for military, Veteran, and RCMP clients — EMDR trained, with deep experience supporting serving and former members through operational stress injuries, trauma, and the transition to civilian life. She is the only clinician on our team able to work across every coverage stream we accept — including VAC, CAF, RCMP, NIHB, and most private insurance — so there's no coverage guesswork.

Daytime availability
Mitzi sees clients weekdays between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM — often the easiest window for Veterans and serving members to book.

Common Questions

Questions about VAC/CAF

Do I need a referral from VAC?↓
Not exactly. You need a VAC-approved condition that includes mental health coverage. If you have a case manager, they can help you with the authorization. If you don't, we can guide you through what to ask for.
What if I haven't been approved by VAC yet?↓
We can still see you. You'd either pay privately, use other coverage you may have (insurance, Veteran Family Program, etc.), or wait until VAC approval is in place. We'll talk through your options.
Can my spouse or family member access therapy through this?↓
VAC's Veteran Family Program (VFP) offers mental health support for spouses, partners, and adult children of veterans through a separate set of services. Coverage details vary, and we can help you figure out what applies.
Is this confidential? Will my therapy notes be shared with VAC?↓
Your sessions are confidential. We submit basic billing information (dates of service, billing codes) but the content of your sessions stays between you and your therapist. VAC doesn't see what you talk about.
Can I do sessions virtually?↓
Yes. We offer secure virtual sessions across Atlantic Canada. Many clients find this works well, especially if travel or shift schedules make in-person tough.
